They say the house always wins. But with a step towards sustainability, City of Dreams is giving everyone—especially the environment—a chance at winning.

In this era of global warming and climate change, the lowering of carbon footprint seems to be the directive of the day. But with its lights on 24/7, the odds are certainly not in the favor of the gaming complex. What to do when you want to be sustainable—but still need to put a smile on the face of every well-satisfied guest at all hours of the day?

The answer turns out to be solar.

Saving power for a thousand homes

City of Dreams has just signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) with Meralco and its renewable-energy unit, Spectrum, to install a rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system.

In its first year, the 1.2-megawatt PV system can produce an estimated 1.6 million kilowatt hours of clean electricity, to reduce the energy demand at the 6.2-hectare property during peak daylight hours.

“The forecast reduction in grid power consumption can power 1,000 residential homes, each with an average monthly consumption of P1,500,” asserts Spectrum COO Victor L. Risma IV.

Once the project is completed, he says City of Dreams will be the first Philippine luxury entertainment integrated casino resort to make a serious investment in protecting the environment. The PV system also represents the property’s commitment to achieving sustainability. “By harnessing the power of the sun during peak hours, City of Dreams will reduce their yearly carbon footprint by about 850 metric tons, which is equivalent in mass to 17,000 sacks of rice (50 kilos each)!”

City of Dreams will be the first Philippine luxury entertainment integrated casino resort to make a serious investment in protecting the environment.

For his part, Kevin Benning, Senior Vice President, Chief Operating Officer of City of Dreams, asserts: “As a luxury integrated resort, our core promise extends beyond delivering extraordinary services to our guests. We are committed to operate our business through socially and environmentally-responsible best practices. Through 'Sustainable Dreams,' our long-term sustainability program, we aim to establish eco-efficient operations throughout the complex with multi-faceted green initiatives. Working with Spectrum strengthens our drive towards environmental protection, resulting in City of Dreams Manila becoming the first integrated resort in the country to install solar panels as a source of renewable and clean energy.”

The solar rooftop will be installed at the resort’s parking building and is targeted to be completed by December 2019.

Future before finances

“This is another milestone in our company’s drive towards responsible and sustainable energy,” declares Ma. Cecilia M. Domingo, Vice President and Head, Corporate Business Group for Meralco. “By leading the way in sustainable power generation, City of Dreams and Meralco hope to inspire other companies to follow suit.”

The scale of the City of Dreams installation makes for a substantial investment, despite decreasing PV-panel costs. But Domingo sees the project delivering long-term benefits.

“Impact is more significant,” she affirms. “It shouldn’t be seen as mere capital expenditure, but as an investment for future generations.”
